• Hi Callum,
• First- I don't want to put the same picture in twice so I am telling you Pic no.3 in blog entry "back from camp" is me jumping off the rock into the river. Camp was fun. We had a barbecue for literally every meal (in order: tea, breakfast, lunch(as we arrived at night)).

We walked to the first swing bridge on the Atiawhakatu Track which took about an hour. It is "bring a friend" day and we are doing our Argentinab Presentations. I am also making ice-cream for that as part of my "Cooking Tech" badge. Cooking Tech badge is where I earn a badge for completing activities to do with cooking.

The year 5s came back from our overnight camp today. We were really lucky with the weather although we had a cool night. We all brought tents and slept in them. We had a barbeque tea last night and went for a 45 min night walk. Today we went for a walk to a swing bridge and when we got back we packed up the tents , had lunch and the kids went for a swim. The water is straight from the mountains and it's freezing at this time of year. (kids don't seem to feel it!!) Once again thank you for your feedback on the instructions.

Callum (in Scotland)

Hi Callum,

Yesterday I went on a trip to Palmerston North with my ODC Gifted and Talented group to a theatre called "Centrepoint".
We played some theatre sports and put on little plays with some costumes. Another guy called Jack and I went up to the lighting and sound control desk which was fun- there they control volume levels, the sounds that come through the speakers, and all the different light level and when the lights come on.
We also came on a nice, new bus which had a toilet and a TV and DVD player (except we couldn't use them because the toilet was locked and no-one wanted to ask the driver if we could use any of them).
We are doing slides with photos from our time at Solway for a Powerpoint at the Year 6 Graduation- the Year 6 ones will get shown and the Year 5s are doing them for next year.
What are you learning about at school? What are you doing for the topic? We are studying Ways We Use Water and might be doing a Presentation to the BOT on ways we could save water at the school so they could decide to do our ideas or not.

Hello everyone

We haven't made as many replies to your fantastic comments on our instructions as I would have liked. I was out of the class today doing maths (numeracy) testing. We are also making a power point slide to show at the end of year graduation. The slide has pictures from around the school. All but the year 5 children (8 of them) are leaving Solway school at the end of the year. Most people are going to Masterton Intermediate School MIS, but others are going to Chanel, St Matthews Collegiate and Solway College.
On Friday the children are going to MIS to visit for the morning. All the year 5s in the school are going on an overnight camp to Mount Holdsworth.
We are finishing school on the 18th December and we will be away for 6 weeks , this is our summer holiday.

The nearest holidays we have are the end of year holidays
which are a couple of weeks away.
We are still doing our competition with the Yoghurt company (Fresh,n Fruity, Remember?)
and we are in the first stages (getting crew) for a Claymation (stop-motion animation with plasticine models) to promote- the Prize is $10,000 for the class to share- if everybody gets some then we'll only end up with like $15 each.
I am doing the School Newspaper for about a third of my week at school now.

We've had another busy week, as Callum has mentioned him and a small crew have started an online newspaper from a kids point of view - Kids-i. It is pretty cool and features things that are happening around our school. There is even a tribute page to me as it was my birthday today, quite humbling really. We are growing 8 strawberries in groups of 3. They have to keep a grower's diary and record the number of leaves, flowers and fruit etc. I'll send some more info about the competition, it would be really neat to have your input designing posters and it might help our chances of winning!! This is the picture of Alex which was in the paper.
We had a frost this moning, very unusual for this time of year, up to 17 in the day, my tomatoes got frosted!!

Hi I have been to Rarotonga. It was cool we staid at one of the best resorts there. Most days we were at kids club.It is awesome there because on Sundays it is markit day. I have just been working on an online school newspaper (on google sites)
which I have finished the first Issue of. Do you have a school newspaper of any
kind?
We are doing a competition with a yoghurt company called Fresh and Fruity which the
newspaper just came and interviewed us about.
We have to grow strawberry's in Fresh and Fruity pots. We also have to promote the company so I want to do an animated feature and am looking for animating soft ware to do that (do you have any?).

From the first of November it got really noisy at night because the fireworks had started coming
out again.

I didn't celebrate Halloween but not many people in the school did either.

If I remember I may try and contact you after Christmas (I am not giving you my e-mail now).

Awesome to see that you are back and you can access the blog again. Some of our instructions are not quite complete but we will work on them next week to finish them. We have athletics this week (run, jump and throw) at school and the following week is the competition between all the Masterton schools.
Our school pool is being cleaned out today (Saturday) and we will hopefully have a couple of swims before the end of the term. The children caught a frog in there yesterday as the water didn't have chemicals in it over the winter and the water was green. The weather seems to have settled a bit and we are getting days of around 20c. All the summer sports have started including mod- softball and T-ball. Some children play cricket for clubs in town.

Hope you are all well. Thank you for your pieces of writing. The children will have time to read them on Thursday and Friday and give you some feedback. Sorry only a few had time to blog today. The 'filtered' message appeared again but I phoned our ICT technician and he was able to fix it - again! He tried to explain what the problem was but it's too complicated for me!

Hope you are enjoying the weekend. We are hoping for drier weather after flooding in many areas last weekend. Some houses and cars have suffered quite badly. Looking forward to bonfires and fireworks tomorrow night for Guy Fawkes. Do you celebrate this? The children also had a great time dressing up and trick or treating for Halloween last weekend.

We would like to find out more about the similarities and differences between Scotland and New Zealand. Also the Art teacher did Mauri face painting/masks with the children and we hope to send photos. I would like them to use google docs again to send another piece of writing.

The children have just written these about things they know how to do. I got them to share them to Google docs because we were all together in the computer suite. (I haven't read any of them so they are very much their work) They need to proof read them.
We have been focussing on using the correct format for instructions and the use of verbs which best describe what they are doing. And last of all that it makes sense and you can follow the directions.
Format:
Title
Goal - a sentence which further describes what they are doing.
Materials or things they need (may use different words, ingredients etc. )
Method- what to do (this is inportant- does it use good verbs and does it make sense)
Test- A sentence at the end to give a tip or a hint about what you have made.
I think some have still yet to finish I will check in the morning.I hope this all makes sense :-)
